How Motor-IQ works, in plain English.
How does Motor-IQ value a car?
It finds comparable cars for sale (same model and generation, similar spec, year and mileage), weights each by how closely it matches, and adjusts for this car's mileage. That gives the retail value. Your buy-under price is retail, minus prep, minus the margin you want.
What do BUY, MAYBE and PASS mean?
Enter the asking or auction price. BUY: the margin after prep clears your target. MAYBE: it makes some money but not your full margin, or there are too few comparables to be sure. PASS: it doesn't pay. The reasons are always shown underneath.
Where does the prep figure come from?
Your standard prep (set it in Settings), plus every defect on the car's last MOT priced at trade rates: tyres, discs and pads, shocks, and so on. Each line is shown, so you can see exactly what's been added. The figures are guides; adjust your standard prep to suit your workshop.
What's the MOT data?
Every UK MOT test from 2005 to 2024, about 580 million, published by the DVSA under the Open Government Licence. It tells you whether a car's miles are high for its age, what that model most often fails on at that age, and how its pass rate holds up. For the car itself, Motor-IQ reads its own MOT history to spot mileage that goes backwards.
What if there isn't enough market data for my car?
The verdict screen says so, and lets you type what you think it retails for. You still get the most to pay, the margin and Buy, Maybe or Pass, with prep from the car's own MOT included.
How confident should I be in a valuation?
Every valuation shows its confidence and how many comparable cars it used. Low confidence means few close matches: treat the number as a starting point and check the comparables listed.
How does the stock tracker work?
Add cars as you buy them (or paste your whole forecourt on the web dashboard). Every morning each car is re-valued against the market. You get one notification if any car passes 45, 60 or 90 days, or is priced above similar cars, with the price to drop to.
How do part-ex offers work?
Scan the customer's car, tap any damage, and Motor-IQ works out an offer from the market value, its MOT advisories, the damage and your margin. Change the offer if you like, then email the customer a page with your business name on it. They accept or decline from their phone and you get a notification. The offer is yours, made by your business.
How do MOT reminders work, and is it allowed?
When you sell a car (or add past customers), tick that they want MOT reminders, only if they agreed. Four weeks before their MOT runs out they get an email from your business; replies come to you. Every email has a one-click unsubscribe that's applied immediately and can't be overridden. You hold your customers' data; Motor-IQ processes it for you (see our Privacy Policy).
Do I need the app and the website?
The iPhone app is for the forecourt and auctions: scanning, part-ex, stock on the go. The web dashboard has the same stock, customers and offers for your desk, plus imports and exports.
What does it cost?
£99 a month per dealership, with a free trial. Cancel any time from the billing page.
Which cars does it cover?
BMW today. The MOT data already covers every make, and more makes are coming.
How do I delete my account?
In the app: Settings, then Delete account. On the website: Billing, then Delete account. It deletes your account and everything in it straight away (stock, customers, offers, saved cars and alerts) and cancels any subscription. It can't be undone.
Something looks wrong. Who do I tell?
Email hello@motor-iq.com. Wrong valuations are the most useful thing you can send us: include the registration and what you think it's worth.
